Vijf jaar zwoegen op partituren hebben onze studenten erop zitten. Het examenrecital vormt de kroon op al dat harde werk en jij kan erbij zijn! Alle examenconcerten van masterstudenten klassieke muziek en compositie staan open voor publiek. Ook de postgraduaten Soloist Classical Music en Musical Performance Practice en de master na master Hedendaagse Muziek verwennen je oren.

Bram Lefevre

Ik heb voor dit programma gekozen omdat dit stukken zijn die ik heel graag speel. De fantasie van Coste vind ik een werk waar zoveel in gebeurt. Het zit vol emoties en hierin kan je de verschillende mogelijkheden van de gitaar in betrekken. Zoals Segovia het zegt: “de gitaar is een klein orkest”, en hier is dit zeer merkbaar.

De vioolsonate van Bach vind ik een fantastisch werk, er komt zoveel in voor. Deze sonate heeft zoveel verschillende sferen en ik vind het interessant om eraan te werken. Een werk van Bach rond je namelijk nooit volledig af; je kan een bepaalde visie hebben omtrent deze sonate en deze visie kan na een aantal jaren volledig veranderen. Werken met Bach is een eeuwigdurende ontdekkingsreis. Ik ben al enkele jaren aan het werken aan deze sonate en graag wil ik het resultaat hiervan delen met jullie.

Ten slotte Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Tedesco is één van mijn favoriete componisten. Zijn Cappricios de Goya zijn werkelijk prachtig. De klanken die Tedesco uit een gitaar kan halen zijn zo prachtig. Dit concerto is mijn favoriet. Het is een zeer speels concerto en het tovert vaak een glimlach op mijn gezicht. Ik hoop dat jullie er even hard van zullen genieten als ik!

Stef Van Vynckt

Inmiddels een jaar geleden vroeg Stef Frank Nuyts om naar aanleiding van zijn Masterproef een werk voor harp en piano te schrijven waarbij het Concerto van Jongen en de Conte Fantastique van Caplet dienst deden als inspiratie. Stef is dan ook enorm verheugd en vereerd dat Frank Nuyts op zijn vraag inging en na reflectie over het werk van Caplet in het bijzonder The Shadow Twins componeerde. Hij wordt bij de creatie vergezeld door pianist Ivo Delaere.

Frank Nuyts verwoordt het tot stand komen als volgt:

“De harp wordt natuurlijk altijd geassocieerd met een soort toverpracht, met een feeërieke en/of exotische sfeer. Er zijn zulke elementen weer te vinden in het verhaal van Poe, maar uiteindelijk is het een typische ʻgothic storyʼ, waarin dood en verderf de hoofdtoon voeren.

Nu is dit niet iets waar ik zelf graag wil over reflecteren. Als het enigszins kan, kies ik voor de positievere kanten van het leven. En voor humor… Het is het woord ʻreflectieʼ dat bij mij plots een specifiek klankbeeld deed oproepen. En meer bepaald het omgekeerde van ʻterugkaatsingʼ (reflectie in de letterlijke betekenis), namelijk ʻschaduwʼ. De harp, een instrument zonder mechanische demping, die een soort schaduw werpt over de ʻdrogereʼ aangeslagen noten van de piano.” Dichter Luc C. Martens schreef vervolgens reflecties over het werk van Frank Nuyts. De gedichten zullen tijdens de Masterproef gedeeld worden.

Five years of hard work have passed. The exam recital is the result of all that work and you can be there.
All the graduation concerts of the master’s students Classial Music and Composition are open and free to the public, as well as the postgraduates of Soloist Classical Music, Musical performance practice, and the master after master Contemporary Music will be a joy to listen to.

I chose this program because I love playing these pieces. Coste’s Fantasie is a piece in which so much happens. It’s full of emotions and you can include the different possibilities of the guitar. As Segovia says: “the guitar is a small orchestra”, and this is very obvious here.

Bach’s violin sonata is in my opinion a fantastic piece; so much happens in there. This sonata has many different atmospheres and it’s been very interesting to work on it. You can never really finish working on a piece of Bach; you can have a certain vision of this sonata but that can change after a couple of years. Working on Bach is an indefinite exploration. I’ve been working on this sonata for a couple of years and I would very much like to share the result with you.

I will end my recital with Mario Castelnuove-Tedesco, as Tedesco is one of my favourite composers. His Cappricios de Goya are honestly beautiful. The sounds he produces with a guitar are wonderful. This concerto is my favorite, because it’s very playful and it often manages to make me smile. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do!

A year ago, Stef asked Frank Nuyts to compose a piece for harp and piano for his master recital. The Concerto of Jongen and Caplet’s Conte Fantastique served as inspiration. Stef is very glad and feels very honoured that Frank Nuyts decided to meet the request and, after reflection on Caplet’s work, composed The Shadow Twins. For the creation, Stef will be joined by pianist Ivo Delaere.

Frank Nuyts describes realisation as follows: “The harp is always associated with some kind of magical brilliance, with a fairy-like and/or exotic atmosphere. Some of those elements can be found in Poe’s story, but eventually it is a typical ‘gothic story’, where death and destruction rule. This is not something I’d like to reflect upon myself. If possible, I chose the more positive sides to life. And humour…

It’s the word ‘reflection’ that suddenly evoked a specific sound image. More specifically, the reverse of ‘reflection’, namely ‘shadow’. The harp, an instrument without a mechanical damper, that casts some kind of shadow over the ‘dryer’ notes of the piano.” Poet Luc C. Martens, in his turn, wrote reflections on the work of Frank Nuyts. The poems will be shared during the recital.
