Landscape and garden architecture is an aesthetically based profession founded on an understanding of the landscape. As in the working field, designing is at the core of the bachelor programme. Designing is a creative process which consists of exploration and inspiration in order to plan, design and manage outdoor spaces of all scales. The projects in our bachelor programme are based on realistic and mostly actual design cases. Besides design skills and manual and computer-based visualisation skills (for both communication and research by design), a landscape and garden architect needs to have knowledge of ecology, soils, hydrology, (plant)materials, horticulture, construction techniques, policy context, ICT, sociology, history, etc. in order to understand the landscape.

GRADUATION PROJECT

For their graduation project, the students could choose between three projects, varying in scale and theme, but that are similar in complexity of the requested design products. Every student has the opportunity to choose the project that best suits his or her profile as a landscape and garden architect.

01 Community supported agriculture on Castle domain Lisbona

The privately-owned castle domain is transforming from a closed off site to a place where people can come and harvest their own fruits in a natural and tranquil environment. The students are asked to design this CSA both functional and aesthetically.

02 De Donkere Wolk, a new park for Berlare.

On the edge where thousands of years ago the Scheldt flowed and presently the Donk lake is situated the municipality of Berlare bought an old camping site. The site is strategically located as the gate to several nature reserves. The student were asked to give their ideas on the interesting node between village centre and nature reserves.

03 The Moervaart Valley: on nature development, vital countryside and experiencing the landscape. A large part of the Moervaart Valley is being transformed into a nature reserve as compensation for the growth of the harbour of Antwerp. The students were asked to look on how the nature, the vitality of the countryside and the recreational aspects of the Moervaart Valley could be further improved.
