Dries Boutsen, Why are we dancing while we talk so good

master beeldende kunsten - vrije kunsten

NL

The artistic practice of Dries Boutsen is driven by collage. He collects materials that appeal to him because of their abstract qualities, often the traces that are the result of their former function. When these are used as fragments in a new whole, they strip themselves of their initial context in order to generate new content within this whole. The result are 2 or 3 dimensional constructions that are recognizable to the viewer, yet strange. They have an architectural character, but follow a logic that shows the hand of the maker.

For his graduation project, Dries asked himself how he could offer his sculptural objects, which can almost be experienced as subjects, a base that transcends ’the pedestal’ and by doing so transcending the medium of sculpture. The result is a sculptural installation in which he not only tries to have his sculptures communicate with each other, but also with the surrounding architecture and the viewer who moves within the whole.
