Pauline Niks, I am just a scenic spot

Pauline Niks maakte voor haar eindwerk een fotoproject over gekopieerde architectuur in China. Vaak gaat het om westerse architectuur die gekopieerd wordt ten behoeve van vastgoedprojecten, maar ook de Chinese muur en de Temple of Heaven zijn in China op meerdere plaatsen te bewonderen. Door deze ‘sub-realiteit’ te fotograferen wil Pauline de zogenaamde ‘echtheid’ van de documentairefotografie onder de loep nemen.

Manipulatie van de foto doet zich voor op verschillende vlakken en uiteindelijk blijkt de werkelijkheid ook binnen de documentairefotografie slechts een interpretatie van de fotograaf te zijn. In deze fotoserie toont Pauline een wereld die op zichzelf al gemanipuleerd is, waar we bijgevolg nooit met zekerheid over ‘echt’ kunnen spreken.

For her master’s project, Pauline Niks has worked on a photography project on copied architecture in China. This often concerns Western architectural structures that are copied for real estate projects, but the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven can also be admired at several locations in China. By capturing this ‘sub-reality’, Pauline wishes to take a closer look at documentary photography’s alleged ‘authenticity’.

Photographs are manipulated in several ways, and reality, it turns out, is only the photographer’s interpretation, even in documentary works. In this series, Pauline shows us a world that is already manipulated in itself, so that unambiguously speaking of the ‘reality’ of these images becomes impossible from the outset.
