A (true) story

(EN) This is a true story tells the story of a person who withdraws from our society, away from the pressure, burn-outs, individualism, consumer society, mass communication and obligations. This installation, consisting of photos, objects and texts, shows a person’s struggle in search of an alternative way of life. But to what extent can you build something new without breaking it down? Where is the boundary between idealism and radicalism?

Inspired by hermits, Hikikomori, the Unabomber and outsider artists.

The outsider

This is a true story originated from a fascination for the ‘outsider’, a human being who refuses to play his role in our society. Often portrayed as crazy or even considered dangerous. In a sense, this outsider is dangerous, but also necessary: he questions society and exposes its shortcomings.

Yuri van der Hoeven considers it the duty of an artist to assume the role of outsider. The maker does not have to isolate himself or withdraw from society, but a certain distance from the system is necessary. The distance gives the artist the opportunity to uncover new insights.

A (true) story

In This is a true story van der Hoeven explores the boundary between reality and fiction. Fiction creates the possibility to enlarge and to question certain aspects of the “normal” way of life. By creating a fictional world that flirts with reality, van der Hoeven offers the viewer a new perspective on the existing world.

Fiction is often labeled “not true” and Van der Hoeven wants to break through that stigma. His fictional worlds are inspired by facts and real events. In this installation he questions what is real and what is not and places reality in a different light.
